Latest guides
- Dumbphones with WhatsApp: which ones really work in 2026
A dumbphone can run WhatsApp only if it is built on Android. WhatsApp ended support for KaiOS, the system in Nokia flip phones such as the 2720, 2780 and 6300 4G, from 25 June 2024 for new logins (KaiOS notice). If you want WhatsApp, buy a small Android phone; otherwise keep texting.
- Phone without internet for kids: which ones have no browser, and what they cost
A phone without internet has no web browser and, ideally, no app store. Of four phones checked on 2026-10-26, the Gabb Phone 4 and the Bark Phone on its $29 Starter plan have neither (Gabb, Bark). If your child needs calls, texts and location, pick one of those; if you want maps or music apps, look at Pinwheel.
How we research
- Primary sources in every guide. Maker spec sheets, carrier compatibility pages, app support pages, laws and official guidelines from the AAP, WHO, Ofcom and eSafety, linked where each fact appears.
- A date on every page. Each guide shows when it was published and updated, and each source shows when we checked it.
- Written for the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Carriers, prices and laws are named country by country.
Built for families and switchers
Parents choosing a first phone for a child of 8 to 14 get calls, texts and location sorted, with the internet left out until you decide otherwise.
Adults moving to a flip phone, full time or on weekends, find out what still works before they switch: WhatsApp, group texts, maps, music and banking codes.
Who runs Dumbphone HQ
Dumbphone HQ is edited by Alexander Gusev. He tracks down the spec sheet, carrier list or law behind every answer, reads it in full and turns it into a guide you can act on in five minutes.
Questions about this site
What is a dumbphone?
A dumbphone is a phone built for calls and texts, usually without a web browser, app store or social media. Some add a few chosen tools such as maps, music or WhatsApp. Flip phones, keypad phones, E Ink minimal phones and kids phones all count.
What age should my child get a first phone?
Our first-phone guides set the main guidelines side by side, age by age, and match each stage to the phones that fit it. You pick with the evidence in front of you.
Who writes the guides?
Alexander Gusev, the editor, researches and edits every guide. Each one lists its sources and the date they were checked, so you can verify any claim in one click.
Which countries do the guides cover?
The US, UK, Canada and Australia. Phones, carriers, prices and laws differ between them, so every guide names the country each fact applies to and links the carrier or regulator behind it.
How current are the guides?
Every guide shows the date it was published and last updated, and every source shows the date it was checked. When app support or a carrier rule changes, the guide changes with it.
